2011 SD Synod Assembly – Some Post Day 1 Thoughts

Worship is beginning for day two of the Synod Assembly. I was pleasantly surprised to hear the sounds of drums, a guitar, a bass and mic'ed singers; a full praise band was quite a surprise for the synod assembly. Now, we're not rocking out to David Crowder songs or anything, but it's good to see an acknowledgement that not everyone's preferred style of worship is from a hymnal.

It Begins – 2011 SD Synod Assembly

This year’s drive to the Synod Assembly was less of an road trip than last year. Rather than a six (or so) hour drive to Rapid City, I just had a quick 50 minute commute to Sioux Falls. Upon arrival I donated blood and the opening worship service has started. I wanted to get started posting, so I’m sitting outside the sanctuary listening.

The SD Synod vs. The Social Statement

I've received many questions about the vote at the South Dakota Synod Assembly regarding a resolution that was passed to Reconsider and Remove the Social Statement, “Human Sexuality:  Gift & Trust.” Rather than try to summarize everything, I'll be as thorough as I can with it and walk through everything. I'll post the resolution, my notes from the live blog, my impressions of the discussion and my thoughts on why it went the way it did.

*I know this is a bit long. As I said above, I see no other way to present this fairly or accurately. All resolutions and historic votes are from the ELCA SD Synod website.

Off to the SD Synod Assembly

I love road trips. There's something freeing about packing up a car and driving. Our modern journeys typically have less uncertainty than journeys or treks of the past; the excitement, freedom and adventure can certainly still be present though.

Today, along with another member of First Lutheran, I made the trek from Brookings to Rapid City. During our 390 mile drive we conversed about politics, the church, family and music. We listened to a few NPR podcasts, the Stuff You Should Know podcast, the Stuff You Missed in History Class podcast and a little O.A.R. (the live album Rain or Shine).
